Mt. Airy Massage Therapy and Acupuncture

Massage has been used for more than 3,000 years by the Chinese. Early in the 19th century, the Swedish physician Per Henrik Ling (1776–1839) devised a massage system for joint and muscle ailments, which was later extended to relieve deformities of arthritis and re-educate muscles following paralysis.  He is recognized as the Father of Modern Massage.  Manipulations include light or hard stroking, compression (kneading, squeezing, and friction), and percussion (striking with the edges of the hands in rapid alternation).

Massage therapy traveled on across the land to Ancient Greece where it was used as a remedy for many ailments, especially those related to the athletic sports that were so popular. Even Hippocrates, the Father of Medicine, used massage therapy in his practice.

From Greece on to Rome and to Persia, the full body massage became popular to loosen stressed muscles, relax nervous tension and increase the circulation of the blood.  Today, massage therapy is known for being part of the treatments used in holistic healing.
